Physician Oversight for Ann Arbor Medspas, Wellness Clinics, and Telehealth Practices
Medical Director Co. places a Michigan-licensed medical director in Ann Arbor, MI within 24 hours, with your required agreements drafted and ready to sign. As your medical director, the physician delegates and supervises medical procedures under MCL 333.16215. As your collaborating physician, they sign the written authorizations NPs need for controlled substances and the practice agreements PAs need to practice. We work with medspas, weight loss and hormone clinics, IV hydration studios, and telehealth practices across Washtenaw County. Your Ann Arbor medical director signs your agreements, sets your protocols, reviews charts, and backs your prescribing decisions — so you get the physician oversight Michigan requires without handing over control of your clinic.

Common Pain Points
Michigan NPs can prescribe GLP-1s like semaglutide on their own, but testosterone, ketamine, and phentermine require a physician’s written authorization.
Botox, fillers, laser, and microneedling are medical procedures in Michigan, so the provider performing them needs a physician who delegates the work and verifies their training.
Clinics often wait weeks for a physician, or sign with one who reviews charts slowly or limits which services they can offer.

Compliance Deep-Dive
Michigan Medical Director & Collaborating Physician Rules for Ann Arbor Clinics
Under MCL 333.17211a, Michigan NPs can prescribe nonscheduled drugs without physician involvement, while Schedule 2 to 5 controlled substances require physician delegation. Board of Medicine rule R 338.119 requires a written authorization listing both providers’ names, license numbers, and signatures, any limits, and the effective date. Every controlled-substance prescription carries both the NP’s and the physician’s names and DEA numbers, and the physician updates the authorization every year.
Under MCL 333.17047 and its osteopathic counterpart, MCL 333.17547, a Michigan PA can’t practice without a practice agreement with a participating physician. The agreement sets how the PA and physician communicate and make decisions, names an alternate physician for consultation, and requires the physician to verify the PA’s credentials. Either side can end it with at least 30 days’ written notice.
MCL 333.16215 lets a physician delegate tasks within their scope to a licensed or unlicensed person qualified by education, training, or experience, under the physician’s supervision. Tasks that require a physician’s own skill and judgment can’t be delegated. For your medspa, that means written protocols naming who performs Botox, fillers, laser, and microneedling, with documented training for each provider.
Your medical director doesn’t have to work on site, since MCL 333.16109 defines supervision as continuous availability for direct communication, regular practice review, and written procedures and drug protocols. For virtual visits, MCL 333.16284 requires patient consent before treatment. MCL 333.16285 lets providers prescribe within their scope via telehealth, holds controlled substances to in-person rules, and requires the prescriber to stay available for follow-up care.
Every prescriber must register with MAPS, Michigan’s prescription monitoring system, before prescribing controlled substances. Under MCL 333.7303a, the prescriber also reviews the patient’s MAPS report before prescribing more than a three-day supply of any Schedule 2 to 5 drug. Your NP needs a DEA registration and a Michigan controlled substance license, along with the physician’s written authorization.
Every Medical Director Co. placement includes malpractice coverage for the physician’s oversight role. NPs, PAs, and clinic owners should still confirm their own policies cover the delegated services they perform.
House Bill 4399 would let Michigan NPs practice and prescribe without a physician agreement once they meet the bill’s requirements. The House Health Policy Committee advanced an amended version in November 2025, and the bill had not become law at the time of writing. The current delegation rules still apply, and we’ll update your agreements if the law changes.
Common Compliance Mistakes We Prevent
- NPs prescribing testosterone or phentermine without a written authorization from a physician.
- Written authorizations that pass their annual review date.
- PAs starting work before their practice agreement is signed.
- Medspas letting staff perform injectables or laser without written delegation protocols.
- Controlled-substance prescriptions missing the MAPS check or the physician's DEA number.

FAQs
FAQs: Medical Director in Ann Arbor, MI
Michigan NPs can prescribe nonscheduled drugs without a physician agreement under MCL 333.17211a. Controlled substances like testosterone and phentermine still need a physician’s written authorization, and procedures you delegate to staff need physician oversight. Your ownership structure is a separate legal question, so confirm it with a Michigan healthcare attorney before you sign a lease.
Any Michigan medspa offering Botox, fillers, laser, or other medical treatments needs a licensed physician to delegate and supervise that work under MCL 333.16215. The physician verifies each provider’s training and keeps responsibility for the delegated services. Medspas offering only non-medical services, like standard facials, fall outside this requirement.
Michigan’s definition of supervision in MCL 333.16109 doesn’t require the physician to be on site. The physician must stay available for direct communication, review your practice regularly, and set written procedures and drug protocols. Every Ann Arbor placement includes those protocols and a set chart review schedule.
Michigan’s licensing boards can discipline providers who practice outside their legal scope, with grounds listed in MCL 333.16221. Sanctions under MCL 333.16226 range from fines and reprimands to license suspension or revocation. A signed physician agreement before you offer delegated services or controlled substances keeps your license protected.
We match most Ann Arbor clinics with a Michigan-licensed physician within 24 hours. You can book a same-day intro call to talk with the physician before you sign. Your agreements and protocols come drafted, so launch timing depends on your own review.
